A good spot for birdwatching is next to the mouth of the lake Pape canal. This 1,77km waterway links Lake Pape to the Baltic Sea. The place is accessible on foot from Pape village.

The birds are aligned in an approximately 1 km narrow band between the sea and the lake. During the migration peak, which is at the end of September to October, some days see birds flowing seamlessly along the streams. The main bird population consists only of a few species – chaffinches, tits, goldcrests, siskins, and others, but many other species move alongside them. A stream of small birds is followed by a set of sparrowhawks, a bit higher the common wood pigeon and geese flocks are an often occurrence.

Lake Pape

The lake is located 6 km from Rucava. It is separated from the Baltic Sea with a 1-2 km wide sand dune. It is a public lake located in the Nature Park Pape Reserve. The length is 8.3 km, the average width 2.8 km, the bank line length is 40.4 km. The lake is very shallow, with the average depth of 0.5 m and the largest depth of about 2 m. The deepest places are in its eastern part opposite Kalnišķi and Brušviti. The water exchange is influenced by the sea water that regularly flows into the lake and create biological diversity characteristic of lagoon type lakes. The bed is flat, with layers of silt of up to 5 m. The lake is overgrown for about 80%. The overgrowth consists mainly of reeds, rush, sedge, coltsfoot, pondweed. The banks are mostly low and sandy, peaty in the W and NW banks, sandy in the E and SW banks, stony in the N end. The bank line is indented, with many peninsulas. Depending on the water level, the peninsulas turn into islands and vice versa (5-12 islands).
