Lielais Square has become a popular place for taking walks, resting and meeting locals as well as guests.

The unique Frigate "Whale" fountain revealed in Augusts 5, 2016, the angular relief and the gorgeous greenery create a special atmosphere. Frigate "Whale" is not only a wonderful fountain, but also a real visual adventure within the urban environment of Ventspils. The shape of the fountain portrays Duke Jacob’s sailing ship on a foggy day, with its astounding number of masts (20) and yards (8) appearing in front of by-standers, whereas the lighting that is turned on during the dark hours of the day is worthy of a movie scene. The fountain has also been praised by the Latvian Designers’ Society, which gave it the "Annual Award 2016" in the environmental category of the professional contest among 120 different objects.

Across the Frigate "Whale" fountain, the concert hall "LATVIJA" was built, which started its concert activity in July 2019. You can find out more about the concert hall "Latvija" here.
